It is an acute psychiatric service for those patients who can be cared for in the community but who require a higher level of support and follow up than would be available through routine outpatient attendance, and offers an alternative to in-patient admission for some patients. A high level of support is provided by Crannog nursing and medical staff to patients and their families.

Crannog also caters for patients who are discharged from hospital, after an acute episode of illness, but who require a high level of support in the early discharge period.

To access Crannog, patients must be referred by medical staff from the Community Mental Health Team. Each patient is assessed prior to admission to Crannog and an individual care plan is devised in consultation with the patient. Following discharge from Crannog, patients usually attend their sector outpatient clinic.
