About Us

...............................................................................................................................................................................

The AIPU opened in March 2009 and is on the grounds of St Vincent’s Hospital Fairview (SVHF). We provide a range of dedicated services for young people aged from 16 years up to 18th birthday, who are experiencing thoughts and feelings which can make it difficult for them to cope with everyday life. The catchment area for our services is Dublin north city and county and the north east area of Ireland, including Louth, Meath, and Cavan.

The unit provides inpatient care and treatment for young people who have mental health conditions like depression, eating disorders, psychosis. The unit is an approved centre that is closely monitored and reviewed regularly by the Mental Health Commission (governing body).

There are currently 8 beds, the unit initially opened with 6 beds with a view to further increasing in the near future. All young people have their own bedroom space.

The AIPU is part of the services provided by St Vincent’s Hospital Fairview. It is located on the upper floor of the hospital (with lift access). Below the AIPU is our adolescent day hospital. There is a school on the hospital campus. We have access to outdoor gardens and recreation space.

All young people will be allocated a psychiatrist (doctor) and nurse. In the initial days of admission young people will be introduced to members of the multidisciplinary team.
